Today’s companies can’t focus solely on profits. They must be driven by a purpose to make the world a better place. Surveys have found that 96% of people believe their own actions can make a difference in the world, and 88% of consumers want brands to help them live sustainably. Successful companies not only provide great products, but also contribute something good to the earth. Ever wonder if COVID-19 travel restrictions are good for the planet? In the future we might see more virtual travel through virtual reality glasses, to reduce our carbon footprint, and also preserve increasingly fragile tourist attractions - according to futurist Nancy Giordano. Emissions from transport have dropped in the last few months. But eventually travel restrictions will be lifted, and the world will go back to normal. If the damage to the environment were as inconvenient now as COVID’s immediate dangers and interruptions in daily life, I believe would people care as much about the environment as they do the interruptions COVID is bringing to daily life. We’re not there yet, but we have a small window to start making changes so we won’t get there. I have a three year old daughter, and I do worry about the world we are handing over to her. I ask, what will it take for the world to come together to start fixing it in the way we have come together over COVID?
Having a strong purpose contributes to a strong customer experience. Consumers are willing to try new products and brands to do their part to help the environment. Some of the biggest impact comes from making small, everyday choices with a purpose.
In celebration of Earth Day, here are nine innovative and purpose-driven companies that provide customers with sustainable alternatives to everyday products.
1.Bite
A company on a mission to reduce plastic waste, Bite sells small tablets of toothpaste. Simply bite down on the tablet and brush with a wet toothbrush to get the same clean teeth as traditional toothpaste. The products come in both mint and activated charcoal varieties either as a one-time purchase or a regular subscription, and every package is completely compostable. The small act of not having plastic waste from toothpaste tubes and using all-natural ingredients can help customers limit plastic in oceans and help the environment.
2.Ethique
Plastic containers from shampoo and conditioner are found all over landfills. Ethique uses a creative solution with its shampoo bars. Similar to bars of hand soap, these bars are formulated for different types of hair, including oily or dry hair, and each is the equivalent of three plastic bottles of shampoo. The bars are compostable and don’t create any plastic waste while also getting your hair as clean as the traditional shampoos.
3.Uncommon Coffee Roasters
Those little coffee pods are popular in the morning, but the waste can add up over time. Uncommon Coffee Roasters developed compostable pods that offer the convenience of a single-serve coffee pod without the waste. The pods are made of plant-based materials and are completely compostable. Even the packaging is completely recyclable.
4.Bee’s Wrap
Every plastic bag and small piece of plastic wrap adds up to huge waste for most Americans. Bee’s Wrap reusable plastic wrap is made of organic cotton coated with beeswax, tree resin and organic oils. The heat of your hands molds the wrap to whatever shape is needed, meaning it can be used in numerous ways, from stretching to cover a bowl to wrapping around leftover food. Unlike regular plastic, the wrap can easily be cleaned and used again and again.
5.Dropps
For decades, laundry detergent was sold in large plastic containers, which ended up covering landfills. Single-use pods are more environmentally friendly, and Dropps takes it to the next level with eco-friendly packaging and carbon-neutral shipping. The company removed the dyes and fillers from its detergent to make it safer and offers one-time or subscription services that get the pods straight to customers in a way that’s responsible for the earth.
6.Rocketbook
Many people don’t think of using writing paper as being wasteful, but Americans consume more than 208 million tons of paper a year. The Rocketbook Everlast reusable notebook uses specialized erasable pens and then scans what you write onto an app, converts it to a PDF and saves it to the cloud. The app can even turn handwritten notes into text. After you’ve filled the page, simply wipe it clean to start a new page of ideas without wasting any paper.
7.PATHWATER
Single-use plastic water bottles were once a common sight, but they’ve started to be replaced in recent years. One of the most innovative replacements for comes from PATHWATER, which sells responsibly sourced water in reusable aluminum bottles. The bottle is completely recyclable and keeps water colder for longer. Instead of contributing to plastic waste in oceans or landfills, the aluminum bottles can be washed and reused or recycled.
8.BogoBrush
BogoBrush sells two innovative and eco-friendly toothbrush options: the first is completely recyclable and can be put in the recycling bin when you’re done. The other brush is 100% biodegradable and made from bioplastic and leftover plant material. BogoBrush not only encourages customers to practice good oral health by regularly replacing their toothbrushes, but it reduces plastic waste and donates a toothbrush for every toothbrush sold.
9.Caraway Cookware
You may have seen “The Devil We Know,” a Netflix doc that details the alleged corporate decades-long cover-up of the potential harm caused by chemicals used to make popular Teflon products - and generated awareness that Teflon poisoning is a thing. And the impetus for founder of Caraway Cookware Jordan Nathan’s creation after experiencing Teflon poisoning himself. Caraway, while also gorgeous and incredible to cook with, is a non-toxic, easy-to-use ceramic non-stick cookware set. Ceramic resists heat better than PTFE based coatings (Teflon), which means if you accidentally overheat your pan, it won’t release toxic chemicals into the air or your food. (Disclosure: the company sent me some pans to try).
Modern companies must have a purpose and contribute to something bigger than their own bottom lines. These nine innovative companies show that thinking outside the box with creative solutions can help customers live better and help the environment, both of which contribute to a strong customer experience.
