Sam Raimi goes back to his formative years with the Michigan Mafia making short films. This time he is the executive producer on Joe and Lloyd Stas’, The Worst Planet on Earth. Get ready for a goofy, fun romp.
Sam Raimi is going back to his roots in short films. He is the executive producer along with Deborah Liebling of Dodgeball and the comedic hit web TV series, PEN15, of a goofy effort from filmmakers, Joe and Lloyd Stas. Liebling is also Raimi’s partner on his upcoming NEW TV venture, 50 States of Fear.
From the very first frame of The Worst Planet on Earth, you feel like you are watching a Raimi short of yesteryear. The old-timey newsreel music sets the tone for this endeavor featuring Olivia Newton as Penny the astronaut and Michael Muyunda as her sidekick, the inept wizard, Cola. Possibly named as such for his penchant of drinking the carbonated beverage.
We found this gem on The Vimeo Short Film Channel. This is a treasure trove for all of you short film aficionados. According to Geek Tyrant, Raimi became involved with the Stas brothers when he caught their Spooky Club short in 2016.
That film convinced him that he had to work with the duo so he reached out and the rest is history. The premise behind The Worst Planet on Earth is Penny the astronaut goes through a wormhole in 1968. She ends up in a dystopian future where all of humanity has been destroyed. Now, she wants to get back to the past where she belongs.
She enlists the aid of Bone Bone, “the most-evil overlord in the galaxy,” to assist her in her quest. In a very familiar bit to fans of the Evil Dead saga, Penny must summon him by saying his name 3 times. When she does, his presence is announced by a mighty rushing wind effect. Not unlike the Force being unleashed on Ash Williams at the end of the original Evil Dead film.
Another little Easter egg occurs with the “Japanese ghost that appears in random places.” This would appear to be a shout out to Raimi’s Grudge series. It really is a delightful little film with some Monty Pythonesque bits to it. Give it a watch!
