The United States is now the only country that is not part of the Paris Climate Agreement. Even Syria, a country torn by years of brutal and devastating civil war, has recognized the importance of preventing climate disaster and has joined the agreement.
In the face of growing and undeniable evidence of the catastrophic effects of carbon emissions, it is shameful that the second-largest polluter in the world has ignored the warnings and chosen to withdraw from the agreement. While climate scientists and economists are recommending curbing carbon emissions as quickly as possible, the United States is busy loosening restrictions and regulations on pollution, valuing corporate gain and greed over the health and well-being of ourselves, our ecosystems, our planet … our children.
If our federal government refuses to listen to climate scientists and acknowledge the damage we have done and continue to do, then we must act on an individual level. Consider joining the Chico chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby (citizensclimatelobby.org) or Chico 350 (chico350.org/). Urge our representatives to support the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act and the Green New Deal.
We can’t afford another Camp Fire. We can’t afford to destroy the only planet that harbors human life.
