Kyrie Irving is a special player... you watch him and realise he's from a different planet, hails former Boston Celtics ...

  • Kyrie Irving is enjoying a stellar debut season at the Boston Celtics so far
  • Irving joined the Celtics from Eastern Conference rivals the Cleveland Cavaliers
  • The 25-year-old is averaging 24 points, 4.8 assists and three rebounds at Boston
  • His form has propelled the Celtics (22-5) to the top of the Eastern Conference

Kyrie Irving may live on Earth but according to an ex-Boston Celtic the point guard's play on the court is from another universe.

Irving joined the Celtics in a blockbuster trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer and he hasn't looked back since moving to the most successful franchise in NBA history.

The 25-year-old is averaging 24 points, 4.8 assists and three rebounds through 26 games so far this season as Brad Stevens' side sit top of the Eastern Conference standings.

Boston currently hold a 22-5 record - which included a 16-game winning streak - with Irving at the heart of their scintilating start.

Irving may believe that Earth is flat instead of round, something he has publicly expressed, but Brian Scalabrine is adamant that the Celtics No 11'S skillset is too good for anyone else playing basketball on this planet.

'You know the whole flat earth thing? You watch him play and you realise he's from a different planet!' he told Sportsmail.

'His planet must be flat. I think his planet is the size of a basketball court and he dominates his planet. Because I have never ever seen a player like that…

'I'm supposed to be calling the game and being professional. But there are times when I'm on the mic laughing at the things he does.

'From an inside-out shake to a cross and the guy jumps the other way and he goes in for a lay-up, like basketball is not supposed to be that easy.

'All these bums back home who watch him and think they could play in the NBA because they've seen Kyrie do it and they think they can do it too, they can't do it.

'He is a special, special player. I've never seen anything like that in my life. Ever. That's how special he is.'

Scalabrine was part of the last triumphant Boston squad to be crowned NBA champions when they defeated the LA Lakers in six games during the 2008 Finals.

If Irving and his team-mates are to follow in their footsteps then they are likely going to have to get past LeBron James and the Cavs. Cleveland have been Eastern Conference winners for the last three seasons but Scalabrine believes they can be toppled - even with the Celtics's summer signing Gordon Hayward suffering a gruesome season-ending injury in their first match.

'I don't know how close we were to LeBron before. With Gordon going down you were like: "Oh man we're not going to be able to get over that hump".' he added.

'But you see what these guys are doing… it's going to be tough to dethrone the King [LeBron James] – but I think it's going to be a lot more competitive this season. We're coming.'

With Irving reigning supreme at the TD Garden it seems that Boston have a new king on the court - even if planet Earth is alien to him.
