Tom Hanks: Trump's call to soldier's family 'one of the biggest cock-ups on the planet Earth'

Actor Tom Hanks is blasting President Trump for his handling of a phone call to the widow of a fallen U.S. soldier, calling it “one of the biggest cock-ups on the planet Earth.”

"I'm only knowing what I read in the newspapers and what have you, and it just seems like it's one of the biggest cock-ups on the planet Earth, if you ask me," Hanks said in an interview with CNN. "This is a tragedy of the utmost consequence and it goes much longer beyond who's going to come out on top of the news story. I think it's very sad."

Hanks, who received the National Archives Foundation’s “Records of Achievement Award” this weekend, also encouraged Americans to look to U.S. history if they’re worried about current events in America.

"People are upset about what's going on today. They're furious, they're frustrated, they're worked up," Hanks told CNN. "If you're concerned about what's going on today, read history and figure out what to do because it's all right there."

Trump has faced criticism after his call to the widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson after Johnson was killed in an attack in Niger earlier this month.

The family confirmed her description of the call, which took place on speakerphone.

White House chief of staff John KellyJohn Francis KellyMORE ripped Wilson for criticizing Trump, calling her an “empty barrel" who took credit for the funding of an FBI building in Miami in 2015. But video released Friday appears to show that Kelly was incorrect in his accusations against Wilson.

Trump took to Twitter Saturday morning to continue his feud with Wilson, calling her “wacky” and saying she “is killing the Democratic Party.”

He kept up his attacks on Sunday, saying she is "the gift that keeps on giving for the Republican Party."

"Wacky Congresswoman Wilson is the gift that keeps on giving for the Republican Party, a disaster for Dems. You watch her in action & vote R!" he tweeted.
