NASA Is Hiring: Do You Have What It Takes To Protect Planet Earth?

This is not science fiction.

NASA recently shared a job posting seeking applicants for a “Planetary Protection Officer” role.

The job is part of the Office of Safety and Mission Assurance for Planetary Protection. (Who knew such an office even existed?)

The post explains: “Planetary protection is concerned with the avoidance of organic-constituent and biological contamination in human and robotic space exploration. NASA maintains policies for planetary protection applicable to all space flight missions that may intentionally or unintentionally carry Earth organisms and organic constituents to the planets or other solar system bodies, and any mission employing spacecraft, which are intended to return to Earth and its biosphere with samples from extraterrestrial targets of exploration.”

I see a TV series or even a movie in the works just based on this job description.

One of the key requirements of the job is that it may require frequent travel, though they don’t say if you’ll be traveling in light years or miles.

I’m not sure if I know of anyone who has the technical requirement of “advance knowledge of Planetary Protection” for the job. Maybe The Last Starfighter or Kevin Flynn from Tron should apply.

Do you have what it takes to protect the Earth?
