Over the years, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has carved a distinguished path in space exploration. The space program has continuously exceeded expectations, capturing worldwide admiration through its bold and cost-effective missions.

Now, ISRO is gearing up for its next ambitious venture—a mission to send a rotocopter to Mars, akin to NASA's Ingenuity quadcopter, which recently completed a groundbreaking three-year mission, encompassing 72 flights.

As a continuation of its Mangalyaan Mars Orbiter Mission, which concluded its mission in 2022 after nearly a decade orbiting Mars, ISRO is embarking on an audacious mission that entails a lander touching down on Mars and deploying a rover as well as a rotocopter.

The proposed rotocopter, currently in the conceptual phase, is named the Martian Boundary Layer Explorer (Marble).

It aims to soar up to 100 metres in the thin Martian air, profiling the Red Planet's atmosphere and conducting in-situ measurements in the near-surface boundary layers.

Equipped with a suite of scientific instruments, including sensors for temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, electric field, trace species and dust, Marble will enable aerial exploration of Mars, providing crucial data for understanding Martian weather patterns and climate history.

This mission holds immense promise in unravelling the mysteries of Mars, aiding in predicting future conditions, identifying hazards, and facilitating the planning of forthcoming exploration endeavours.

With Marble, ISRO looks set to continue pushing the boundaries of space exploration, cementing India's position as a key player in the global space arena. This mission underscores ISRO's commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and furthering humanity's understanding of the cosmos.
