New Planet Of The Apes Movie's Release Plan Now Looks Like An Impossible Challenge - Screen Rant

Summary

  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes faces a crowded release date alongside other big movies, potentially hurting its box office potential.
  • The film lacks big-name human actors and focuses on the ape protagonists, which sets it apart from most of its predecessors.
  • The Garfield Movie and Furiosa pose a challenge to Kingdom due to their appeal to different demographics.

Audiences might be looking forward to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, but a release date shuffle might be unavoidable. The Planet of the Apes movie franchise looked quite dead in the aftermath of Tim Burton's 2001 remake. Despite the film being a solid financial success, it received roundly poor reviews, to the extent the studio decided against a follow-up. There was little hype for 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes as a result, but the film was a surprise critical and commercial hit that spawned two equally well-received sequels.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the next chapter in the rebooted franchise and follows new protagonist Noa (Owen Teague). This outing picks up many years after the death of ape messiah Caesar (Andy Serkis), with mankind having devolved even further and various ape clans competing for power. Time will tell if the new sequel launches a trilogy of its own, as it faces the dual challenge of following up the mixed reception to the previous entry - 2017's War - while Serkis' Caesar won't be returning in Kingdom for obvious reasons.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Releases Alongside Two Other Big Movies

Kingdom is up against The Garfield Movie and Furiosa

There also aren't many big name actors involved with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, as the franchise is officially turning itself over to the apes as the protagonists, instead of giving audiences a human avatar. The new Planet of the Apes movie is set for release on May 24, 2024 - the same day as The Garfield Movie and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will be released too. Even by summer blockbuster standards, that's a crowded schedule right there, and one of them will likely blink before that date approaches.

Why Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Is At A Disadvantage

Kingdom's rivals appeal to other demographics

While some might roll their eyes at the suggestion Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes faces any danger from The Garfield Movie, they should consider a few factors. One, it's the most family-friendly of the trio released on that date, and the one younger viewers will opt for. It also features Chris Pratt as the voice of Garfield, and it's his follow-up to the $1.3 billion success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Any way it's sliced, The Garfield Movie is likely to become a big hit, while Kingdom also faces a big problem from Pratt's Super Mario co-star Anya Taylor-Joy.

She plays the titular role in the highly-anticipated Furiosa, a prequel exploring the origins of Mad Max: Fury Road's Imperator Furiosa, previously played by Charlize Theron. Fury Road was a major R-rated success in 2015, and earned critical raves; it's now regarded as one of the best action movies of the 2010s. With Super Mario Bros. Movie and Furiosa catering to younger and older audiences on May 24, 2024, poor Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is looking a tad outnumbered.

That's not to say Kingdom doesn't have hype of its own, but compared to its rivals, anticipation is somewhat muted. Again, it's acting as a soft reboot of the saga, while War for the Planet of the Apes earned significantly less than its predecessor, Dawn. Of the three releases, Kingdom is the one with the biggest question mark surrounding it.

Will Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Switch Release Dates?

One of these three movies will likely move

This crowded release date has left Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in a tough spot. In truth, it would be wise to switch dates well in advance of May 24, just to give the sequel some breathing room. Releasing on that day will just eat into the profitability of all three films, and if it earns good reviews, word of mouth could bolster Kingdom to a solid box-office tally.

The original Planet of the Apes movie franchise is currently streaming on Starz.

There's no word on Kingdom switching release dates currently, and the studio might be wary such a move could signal they're lukewarm about its chances. The recent trailer for Furiosa has gotten viewers excited to return to George Miller's wasteland once more, and barring the need for more time to work on visual effects, is unlikely to move its release date around.

Again, the wise money would be on at least one of these movies moving to another date, and Kingdom is the prime candidate. Maybe it will get lucky and one of the others will get pushed back for unforeseen reasons. The studio is hoping there's at least another trilogy in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and they would be wise to give it the best chance of success. Putting it up against two other heavy hitters doesn't sound like the best way to do that.
