Machine learning helps astronomers detect new alien planet - The Indian Express

A team of researchers used machine learning tools to confirm evidence of a previously unknown planet outside our solar system. With this, they demonstrated that machine learning could correctly predict whether an exoplanet is present by looking within the gas around newly formed stars.

According to the researchers, the study published in The Astrophysical Journal represents a first step towards using machine learning to identify exoplanets that may have been overlooked previously.

“We confirmed the planet using traditional techniques, but our models directed us to run those simulations and showed us exactly where the planet might be,” said Jason Terry, lead author of the study, in a press statement. Terry is a doctoral student at the University of Georgia.

When the researchers applied machine learning models to an older set of astronomical observations, the models suggested the presence of a planet. This was indicated by many images that highlighted a particular part of the “protoplanetary disc,” or rotating disc of dense gas surrounding a newly-born star.

In that region of the disc, there was an unusual fluctuation in the velocity of the gas, which is the characteristic sign of a planet, according to the researchers.

According to Cassandra Hall, until now, machine learning was only used to find forming exoplanets that were already known. Now, the researchers have proved that models can be used to make brand-new discoveries.

In this case, the models were able to detect a signal in data that people had already analysed; something that was not detected by other researchers. According to Terry, this means that machine learning in general has the ability to quickly and accurately identify important information that people could miss.
