By India Today Web Desk: The Perseverance rover has successfully completed two years of operations on Mars. The SUV-sized rover entered the third year of operation on the Red Planet as it continues to scour the region for signs of ancient microbial life, that could prove that the planet once had life.
The rover is trundling in the Jazero crater, which is believed to be the source of a massive water-filled lake in the planet's ancient past. The six-wheeled rover arrived on Mars on February 18, 2021, and since then the nuclear-powered vehicle has been examining geologic features and collecting samples of the Red Planet.

It recently completed building the first depot on another planet as it dropped 10 titanium tubes filled with Martian samples of rock and soil to be brought to Earth by future missions for deeper analysis. Scientists want to study Martian samples with powerful lab equipment on Earth to better understand the processes that have shaped the surface of Mars.
In its third year, the rover has been instructed to perform remote science and take images of a place in Jezero Crater called “Jenkins Gap.” Nasa said that the weather at Jezero Crater is expected to be sunny with a high of minus 14 degrees Celsius, making it conducive for science operations to continue.

“Anniversaries are a time of reflection and celebration, and the Perseverance team is doing a lot of both. Perseverance has inspected and performed data collection on hundreds of intriguing geologic features, collected 15 rock cores and created the first sample depot on another world. With the start of the next science campaign, known as ‘Upper Fan,’ on Feb. 15, we expect to be adding to that tally very soon,” Perseverance project scientist Ken Farley said.
During its two years on Mars, the rover has driven 14.97 kilometers on the alien world. What's even more exciting for the team is that the Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) technology has produced 92.11 grams of oxygen and the Gas Dust Removal Tool (gDRT) has puffed 62 times to clear residual dust and particles from rock-abrading activities.
“We deal with a lot of numbers. We collect them, evaluate them, compare them, and more times than we want to admit, bore our loved ones with them during a family dinner,” Perseverance deputy project manager Steve Lee added.
The rover has so far captured a whopping 1,66,000 images.
