My climate dread was at its height in the summer of 2018. At night I had recurring dreams of human-size cockroaches flooding the streets. I felt as if I was standing in a cramped space between walls of raging fire that were closing in, advancing toward me ever more rapidly. In the morning, when I looked out of the window and saw folks in the street whizzing by on their electric scooters, I couldn’t understand what prompted them to go to work.
