Caltech Professor Mike Brown, named as one of Time magazine’s 100 People Who Shape Our World in 2006, will be giving an update on scientists’ progress in the search for Planet Nine on “Authors and Their Journeys,” a series sponsored by the Pasadena Public Library, from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 8.
In this virtual event, Brown will use his book, “How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming,” to reveal the most recent discoveries in outer space that point to the existence of the unseen planet well beyond Neptune.
In 2005, Brown shook the world of astronomy by discovering the existence of a 10th planet, slightly bigger than Pluto. With the discovery, instead of one more planet being added to the solar system, Brown ignited a firestorm of controversy that culminated in the demotion of Pluto from real planet to the newly coined category of “dwarf” planet.
In “How I Killed Pluto and Why It Had It Coming,” Brown takes the reader through the most tumultuous year in modern astronomy with both humor and drama.
“Mike Brown is the funniest, smartest, and most surprisingly poetic Caltech astronomer who ever made my daughters cry,” Caltech comedian Sandra Tsing Loh said of the book. “Certainly their happy nine-planet childhoods were worth sacrificing for this truly fascinating and engaging read.”
During the lecture, Brown will feature new discoveries that continue to strengthen the hypothesis, new analysis which refines where to look, and new observations that will reveal this hidden giant.
