Letters: Ambulance crew; Jan. 6 riot; saving the planet - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Ambulance crew was fast, efficient, and life-saving

The Loveland ambulance crew saved another life. I know because it was my life.

While I was eating lunch, I developed chest pain. I called 911 and in maybe 5-10 minutes they were in my driveway. Within seconds to a minute, the crew discovered I had ventricular tachycardia, a deadly rhythm. They quickly gave me medicine and then shocked me. At the hospital, doctors implanted a pacemaker and a defibrillator.

So, I’m good to go — thanks to the speed and efficiency of the ambulance crew.

Why are Republicans afraid of the truth?

On May 28, 44 Republican senators voted against an independent and nonpartisan investigation of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, thereby ending the quest to know who was responsible for the gruesome attack on American democracy.

As Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) put it: “It’s important that there be a focus on the facts and on the truth. And that may be unsettling, but we need to understand that.” Why are Senate Republicans afraid of the truth? Isn’t it time for Republicans to face the truth? Isn’t it time for Republicans to stand up and be counted as real Americans? Isn’t it time to say, “enough is enough?”

Shameless Republicans can cover up the truth for a while, but the truth always wins out. And we know what it is — former President Donald Trump and his minions instigated the Jan. 6 trashing of the Capitol.

Needed for Earth’s children – inhabitable planet

Red, yellow, black and white,

When kids can’t breathe right, it’s a dizzy life.

In slums or reservations, there’s added pollution

For Earth’s children of color, that’s no solution.

I’m white. I didn’t experience the worst, but in 1942, in post-Depression New York, smoking chimneys meant jobs and prosperity.  Also wheezing lungs for this girl who wished not to walk, but to un free.

My dad enlisted, with other young men and dads, to fight overseas, to stop Hitler, Franco, Mussolini, Hirohito. Pearl Harbor, Auschwitz, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, the bombs, cities in rubble, so many cities and lives, destroyed.

Would humanity choose world peace or wars without cease? Sadly, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Iraq.

In 1953, our first car — a jeep — brought us to Colorado and the Rockies. Home — a summer tent and hikes, trees, a clean breeze. Soon, a house in Denver, school kids laughing at my New York accent, an all-white neighborhood which became black, as hard working families seeking good homes, schools, jobs became our good neighbors.

From the ’50s on, our government decided the A-bomb wasn’t bad enough. They developed the H-bomb and more. We had the United Nations. Could we not all share Earth’s resources and get along in peace? Would we remain children fighting for land and resources? Come on, people now. Our Earth survives, or we die.

For 500 years, indigenous people worldwide have been shoved aside by conquering nations.  Now we finally begin to see the light — a climate catastrophe, or trade greed for sharing, rebuilding, cooperating for what’s right.

Wars, prisons, pollution, waste are expensive. Global cooperation, living environmentally to save our planet.

We can’t afford not to! All 8 billion of us. We have a choice. Please. Let’s choose to work together to all survive and thrive.
