What planet are you on today? Use the stars to your advantage - Daily Mail

What planet are you on today?

' Knowing the link between the days and the planets can help you lead a happier life'

Need to tackle a tricky issue? Do it on Tuesday. Want a pay rise? Wait till Thursday. Every day of the week is governed by the stars, says astrologer Carolyne Faulkner. And you can use this to your advantage

Ever wondered why you can’t get out of bed on a Monday? It’s not just because the fun of the weekend is over and the working week is kicking in – it’s as much to do with the fact that each day is governed by a different star, planet or celestial body, which can have huge implications for how we feel and how successful our days will be.

Astrology is about far more than just your star sign. In fact, understanding the effects that the stars and planets have on the days of the week can help you to make better decisions and lead a happier, more fruitful life. The idea dates back thousands of years to 500 BC, when the use of our seven-day week was introduced. The Babylonians were guided by the moon’s 28-day cycle, which they divided into seven-day weeks to reflect its four phases: the new moon, the waxing half-moon, the full moon and the waning half-moon.

But the link between the planets and the days of the week was solidified further when the days of the week were given names. It was believed that every hour of the day was ruled by a different celestial body (the planets, sun or moon). The name of the day came from the planet that ruled its first hour – which meant the first day was governed by the sun and was named Sunday. The second day was ruled by the moon (Monday), followed by Mars (Tuesday), Mercury (Wednesday), Jupiter (Thursday), Venus (Friday) and Saturn (Saturday). Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were as yet undiscovered.

If you think of any of the romance languages, such as French, Spanish or Italian, you can clearly see the association – for example, Tuesday in French is ‘mardi’, in Spanish it’s ‘martes’ and in Italian ‘martedi’.

I’m not the sort of astrologer who will tell you that you shouldn’t sign a contract on a certain day because the planets aren’t correctly aligned, but I do believe that certain days are more auspicious than others when it comes to getting the outcome you want.

BLAME THE MOON FOR MOODY MONDAYS

We all hate Mondays: the early alarm, the return of work and school, and the hangover from the weekend. But astrologers believe Mondays are ruled by the moon, which governs feelings, and that can make the first day of the week even worse. The problem is that the moon is so changeable, with its waxing and waning, that it can cause us to be moody. And there’s huge amounts of evidence to suggest that it’s long been thought that the moon can affect our mental health. Research suggests that changes in the moon’s gravitational pull, which affect the tides, can also affect human emotions, particularly in those who are prone to depression. That’s why you sometimes have that Mondayish feeling, even if you work from home or do a job that you really love.

On the plus side, a lot of creativity is linked to the moon, so Mondays are good days for long-range planning, for starting to think about how you’re going to approach a bigger project, for reflective contemplation and sketching things out.

Best day for making a list. Include all the little things that need attending to, such as taking out the recycling. Avoid starting something totally new – the moon’s involvement may lead you to change your mind.

MARS WILL HELP YOU FEEL COURAGEOUS ON TUESDAYS

Tuesday is ruled by Mars, the planet that was named after the Roman god of war. Mars also rules the month of March – a time that the Romans considered to be good for going to war and winning. It means Tuesdays are often associated with conflict, but in fact it’s a good day for being proactive, courageous and brave, and tackling stuff head-on – for initiating the plans that you started sketching out on Monday. Perhaps schedule some meetings and put the feelers out for new opportunities. You’ll probably have more energy today than you did yesterday, but channel it wisely. Go for a run before delving head-first into your inbox.

Best day for requesting meetings or tentative pitches, blitzing the house if it needs a clean, and maybe shaking stuff up or moving it around.

USE MERCURY-RULED WEDNESDAYS TO PLAN

This is usually one of the busiest days of the week and that might be because Mercury, a planet that’s intimately associated with communications and fast-paced activity, governs Wednesday. In mythology Mercury was the swift messenger, representing the power of intellect, which is why astrologers believe it governs the mind. So this is a good day for anything that requires any complex mental acrobatics, and anything to do with planning or developing strategies.

Best day for analysis in general, fact finding, communications (this includes listening and reading between the lines). It’s not necessarily the best day for finer details or the art of subtlety.

THANK JUPITER FOR YOUR POSITIVITY ON THURSDAYS

Many people think that the reason they feel more positive on a Thursday is because the weekend is heading into view.

But actually it’s more likely to be because Thursday is ruled by Jupiter, which represents expansion, growth and optimism. It makes Thursday a good day to have any difficult work conversations. But beware, this positivity can all too easily boil over into something that resembles pig-headedness, so don’t go over the top when trying to make your point or get your own way. If you’re trying to negotiate, take the time to qualify the other person’s needs, listen to what they’re saying and respond to that.

Best day for asking for a pay rise. The combination of optimism and vision means that it’s a good time to make a strong case for why you’re worth more. Jupiter is not always skilled with timing, though, so plan your approach carefully.

BOOST COMMUNICATION ON FRIDAY WITH VENUS

It’s interesting how our modern working week stems from the planets that govern the days. We wind down the week on Fridays, the day that’s ruled by Venus – also known as the goddess of love, sex, beauty and fertility. It makes Friday a great day for some ‘me time’, dressing like a goddess and getting ready to go out with those you love. Venus is also intrinsically linked with Libra, a sign of diplomacy, balance, harmony and partnerships, so it can encourage us to talk more. It means the happiness we feel on Fridays isn’t just down to the start of the weekend, but also because Venus makes this a great day for communicating with friends and family.

Best day for spending time with loved ones. But beware: Venus’s link with Libra can also make us critical and judgmental. So if you need to have a tricky conversation today, approach these discussions sensitively.

SATURN ENCOURAGES PRODUCTIVE SATURDAYS

Saturday is ruled by Saturn, which is not a particularly easy planet, because it pushes you into doing things – although admittedly some of us need this. Historically, Saturn was also seen as the planet that represents authority, old age and structures. It makes it a great time for actioning tasks you’ve been meaning to get done – if you need to order an item or sort out the garden, today is the day to do it.

Best day for being practical. You may want to unwind after a busy week, but don’t have a lazy day. Instead, use Saturn to help you do the housework or a DIY project, or campaign for a cause close to your heart.

LET THE SUN INSPIRE CREATIVITY ON SUNDAYS

Historically, Sunday has been a day of rest. It’s ruled by the sun – which represents energy, joy and creativity – and is a very positive day. The sun is all about warmth and love, which is why we tend to devote Sundays to family or friends. It’s a day for recharging, which ties in with the idea that when the sun rises at dawn, we are reborn. It’s also no coincidence that the sun rules Leo, a sign known for being warm, caring and generous – and sometimes a little lazy.

Best day for letting go of stress. Don’t be ambitious with your plans; instead, arrange to have a low-key day and let the sun’s energy pull you together with the people you love.
