A few weeks ago I saw a Black Rail (Laturallus jamaicensis coturniculus) at the Colusa Wildlife Refuge. It’s a rare bird indeed. Secretive. Cryptic. Like some snipe or the odd bittern, but different. The only other place I’ve seen this cat I won’t divulge. I was at the refuge that day for the Marsh Wrens. All nesting in full glory. The best behavior and vocalizations of any local bird in my opinion.
After these encounters I drove north on some back roads through the rice lands. Very flat country. Well graded. Irrigated and sprouting. I came to an intersection and all these cars and trucks were pulled over. Folks out and chatting.
Curious, I did the same. I asked where they were from and heard “all over.” I asked why they were there and all said “It was the edge of the earth.” Fascinated, I asked how they knew? All were in agreement on a TV channel, some folks on the radio, and this Internet thing. Lots of strong faith in these voices.
I turned around and went west to I-5, then home. Made a big tostada for my wife for dinner. Thought about what would have happened if I drove off the edge of the planet. Watered my peppers and read.
