When I read Naomi Klein’s “This Changes Everything,” I felt despair. Hearing about how unfettered capitalism and the pursuit of profit is affecting the Earth made me feel hopeless, and through talking to others who had also read the book, I found I wasn’t alone.
I find that environmental discussions like the ones mentioned in the article “Northfield book, film discussion group grapples with environmental issues” often end with the question, “What can we do about this?” I’ve found that the best way to get involved is to take part in environmental campaigns.
A personal issue for me is the meat industry –– I became vegetarian as a way of doing my part for the environment, given that industrial meat production ranks among the most environmentally damaging industries on the planet, posing major risks to our climate, water, and public health (and emitting about a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions.). When I found out about Mighty Earth’s new campaign in the Pioneer Valley, I jumped on board.
We are asking Stop and Shop to cut ties with Cargill, the largest industrial meat producer in the world. Cargill is responsible for deforestation, water pollution, and incredible greenhouse gas emissions. Until it takes concrete steps to end deforestation and pollution, we demand that Stop and Shop stop selling its meat. Stop and Shop can be a champion by setting high standards and showing its customers that it is serious about sustainability.
Like Emily Koester, the leader of the environmental discussion group at Dickinson Memorial, I too believe climate change is the fundamental issue, and like her, I want to do everything I can to fight it. Holding corporations accountable for their environmental impact through campaigns like Mighty Earth’s “Stop, Don’t Chop!” campaign is one meaningful way I fight for the planet.
