I love Colorado winters.
I’m glad the scorching days of last summer are behind us. Those 90-degree days put 10 extra pounds on me.
Sure, I had something to do with it, but I swear the heat triggered my weight gain.
Summer’s usually a time when appetites wane — and meals are light.
But kale didn’t call my name this summer. It was Little Debbie Swiss Rolls.
And movies.
It all started when I re-watched one of my favorite movies — “Junebug.” In the film, Amy Adams plays a pregnant young wife whose baby is due any day.
She is living with her in-laws and when everyone in the house is asleep, she quietly goes to the kitchen and gropes the top of the refrigerator where the family keeps everything from cigarettes to snacks.
She pulls down a packaged sweet, ponders whether she should open and eat it, then returns it to the top of the refrigerator with a sign, “Debbie would be a good name.”
That was it! As soon as she said “Debbie” I thought I’d found a solution to my lack of energy on hot days.
“The chocolate in a Little Debbie will give me the boost I need to get through this heat.”
At the store, it was a toss-up between Little Debbies and Chocolate Twinkies, so I bought both. Every week. At least. (I hope my doctor isn’t reading this.)
I didn’t get the boost, but I got the pounds. Now I’m working on better eating habits — which I know is a long-term goal.
As readers know, all our actions — even what we eat — kick off a ripple effect.
What we eat not only affects our personal health but also the health of the planet.
I was surprised to learn my eating too many sugary treats plays a small part in damaging the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia, partially because of agricultural chemicals used to produce sugar.
It’s strange to think that actions in Loveland can damage a Natural Wonder on the other side of the world.
So, it turns out my Little Debbies were not such a sweet treat for me or the planet.
