MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Heavy rain and chilly temperatures are only small hurdles for volunteers working to renovate Planet Playground.
"We knew it was going to rain, and we expected the rain," said program coordinator Julia Norman.
Dozens of volunteers endured the elements Tuesday as they work to meet Sunday's deadline. Organizers say work will continue regardless of the weather because of the week-long contract they have with 'Play by Design' Construction.
"When it is raining, we'll go ahead and do cuts, and routing, and getting boards and cut lists done and things like that. So when the rain stops we can go and get out in the site and start building," said Norman.
Tents and warming stations were set up to create a comfortable atmosphere for all helpers.
"I've been doing some routing. We're working with power tools and shoveling water out of holes and anything that needs to be done. We have to do it," said volunteer Kasey Norton.
The team is fully prepared and has a plan in place in case things get worse.
"As the week progresses and if the rain continues, then we'll tarp the site and things of that nature. And we have all of those supplies prepared to do that," said Norman.
"We will take people of all different experience levels. So just come on out and get ready to work. It gets a little muddy, but it's a lot of fun," said volunteer Mindy Geiselman.
