Farming generally takes a back seat to energy in discussions of climate, but it accounts for up to a third of carbon pollution.
The carbon cycle
Cotton planted among pecan trees in Milton, Florida. 2003. One way to improve soil health is to lay down crops among deep-rooted trees.
Monoculture deprives the soil of essential nutrients.
This graph shows carbon pollution cuts necessary keep warming under 1.5 degrees C, the most ambitious target of the Paris Climate Agreement. Countries must cut emissions in half by 2030 and reach zero net emissions by 2050, at which point much of the remaining carbon dioxide must be removed from the atmosphere through techniques like carbon farming.
