Earth first

Sixty years ago, teachers and scientists were warning, "Take care of the earth or the results will be devastating."  Many of us believed them, even though our air and water were in pretty good shape.

Now that the dolphins, fish and birds are dying and toxins are in our lungs, how many want to do what must be done to keep our earth viable for humans?  We are fortunate that we didn't all die instantly when the toxins entered our lungs.

What kind of people spend money to explore planets that are uninhabitable while destroying the only known planet that will support human life?

True mystery

A little more then two years ago, Donald Trump ran for the presidency and against enormous odds won and became the 45th President of the United States.

He won because he promised the American people a list of things that would serve to make the nation better.  It was more jobs.  An improved economy.  The rebuilding of our military.  The moving of our embassy in Israel. The restoration of "fair" trade.  A sensible immigration plan, including a much needed border wall.  President Trump made good on every promise and more.

His has been a spectacular promises-made and promises-kept performance. In light of all that has been accomplished ... why the voters  decided to make it more difficult for this president to perform is a true mystery.

Handing the Democrats, with no constructive agenda, the control of the House of Representatives can only be considered pure insanity. The Democrats will now stand in the way of progress while spending their time and energy obstructing this administration and disgracing America.  Shame on all those who voted for confusion, obstruction, and hopelessness.  And shame on the media for promoting this travesty.

False claims

A letter from a Trump supporter was laced with false claims. It started with the claim that "Obama's national health service failed." There are 10  million Americans currently able to purchase health insurance that were unable to before the ACA. That bill stopped health insurance corporations from legally denying coverage to Americans with a pre-existing condition. That’s not “a failure.

Then he brought up Antifa, calling them "a gang with black hoods"and accused the Democrats of being violent. He didn't mention the neo-Nazis, or the KKK, that have found a home in the GOP. Nazis, and the KKK pose a far greater violent threat to our nation.

He claimed, "Capitalist Trump scores great gains with manufacturing jobs." Since Trump was elected there has not been one single economic bill passed by Congress. Trump has simply let the economic measures signed by Obama continue. GM recently announced they are idling five factories, and cutting 14,000 jobs. Ford has also announced they are going to be laying off workers. That’s “a great gain?”

He also said "Socialism is not American and will never succeed, anywhere." The FDA, federal highways, Social Security, local fire and police are socialist programs. Those and more are working to our benefit.

Bad rap

In a recent letter, one of your readers complained about the large pension Bill Nelson will receive compared to his friend retired lieutenant colonel. I am a registered Republican and did not vote for Sen. Nelson in the last election. However, in this case Bill Nelson is getting a bad rap.

I spent my 50-plus year working career as either  a union member or an owner of a company working with a union bargaining agreement. Pensions are calculated based on three factors. 1. The position attained during your employment. 2. Length of service. 3. Age at retirement.

Bill Nelson has many years of public service. He obviously is due a full pension. Whether the amount is fair is a discussion for another day. The military officer the reader is referring to most likely opted for an early retirement. It is quite likely that even with 20-plus years, his friend may have been in his 40s or 50s when he retired. Thus the 50 percent pension.
