Neighbors pushing back against new Planet K location in Bryan

BRYAN, Tex. (KBTX) - People living near a proposed head shop in Bryan are not happy about the new proposed business.

Planet K sells things like pornography, sex items and drug paraphernalia at other location in Texas. As KBTX first reported Wednesday, the owners of Planet K are working on opening the business, but haven't been given city approval yet.

There's plenty of push back from neighbors. Karla Noble runs a child care home nearby. She takes care of 12 children every day. Karla's Kare, just a street over from the Planet K, has been open since 1986.

"It's very uncomfortable to me because the children are here and the clients like I said the clientele they're going to bring in," she said.

Between Karla's Kare and Crockett Elementary next to her, Noble doesn't think Planet K is right for the neighborhood.

"It’s not the right location," she said.

"The main Planet K sign didn't get a permit," said Bryan council member Mike Southerland. "Where the building is and what they sell goes in a proper place. We’ve had issues with this in the past and we’ve written a very good ordinance about that," explained Southerland.

He doesn't like the idea either. Planet K isn't in his district, but he says he's hearing from residents. Adult themed businesses have to be zoned in industrial areas. City ordinances state they also can't be within 1,000 feet of a church, public school, public hospital or residential district. He says nearby Cindie's opened up before the city tightened their rules.

"That was a result of that ordinance, what Cindie's did, so I'm pretty sure they're going to have to leave here," said Southerland. "They gotta go through a process. They’ll be treated fairly like every other business in town so the process just has to take it’s course."

Many people have reached out and asked about how Woody's Boutique and Vapor operates in the city. City officials said that store is located in an part of the city zoned for industrial businesses. That zone is the only place the city allows for a business like that to operate.

"Taxes have gone up considerably in this area and nobody's going to want to live in this area," said Noble, who is frustrated with the situation.

The City of Bryan said power to the business has been cut off. Planet K is still going through the permit process.
