Rape, robbery spree alleged for suspect in Planet Fitness parking lot crime

A Monroe man accused of raping a woman after an alleged abduction in the Monroe Planet Fitness parking lot is now accused of a second rape and additional robberies.

Jaquwn Newton, 18, is accused of the armed robbery of a woman on May 23 as she arrived to the front door of her apartment at Shannon Oaks on Shannon Street in Monroe.

Newton reportedly had a gun and ordered the woman to give him money.

Per an arrest warrant, he then ordered her into her home and to perform oral sex and have sexual intercourse him. The victim was threatened with a gun during the incident.

According to the warrant, the suspect took additional items from the home after the rape.

Similarities between the incident and the Planet Fitness robberies and a conspicuous women's style sandal worn by the suspect led police to Newton.

The victim described the suspect's shoes to police, and a similar shoe was lost by Newton when he reportedly ran from officers after a June 19 robbery.

He is facing charges of armed robbery and first degree rape connected to this case.

Vehicle Theft

Newton is also facing additional robbery and theft of a motor vehicle charges related to an April 23 incident on Evangeline.

A black man approached the victim in the case and asked for change. The victim provided some money and then returned to sorting through items in his vehicle.

The suspect approached the man again and pressed an object that felt like a gun into the victim's back.

According to the warrant, the suspect demanded the victim's cell phone. After he was refused, he jumped into the victim's truck and drove away before crashing the truck at North 24th and DeSiard Streets.

The suspect escaped but left a pair of slippers behind.

Planet Fitness Rapes

Newton was taken into custody Thursday after reportedly committing another armed robbery and rape.

An arrest warrant filed for Newton on June 21 states the department responded to a robbery that occurred in the parking lot. The victim said she was going in the gym when she was approached by a black man with a pistol who forced her back into her car and drove away.

Per the warrant, the suspect forced the victim to perform oral sex and robbed her.

According to the warrant, investigators have been working similar cases from the Planet Fitness parking lot and established Newton as the suspect. Per the report, he tried to force other victims to perform oral sex.

A warrant for Newton in the June 6 case indicates the victim in the case was robbed and kidnapped.

According to the report, the woman was leaving the gym when a black man wearing a camo mask and dark clothing approached her and pointed a handgun, forcing her into the passenger seat of her car.

The suspect drove the car to an area parking lot and asked for sex and money. When the victim told Newton all she had was a bank card and no money, he drove her to the Chase bank on Sterlington Road, the report states.

He reportedly took her bank card and withdrew money two times before driving to South 26 and DeSiard Street, jumping out of the car and running away. The victim then took her car and drove away to call the police.

Investigators obtained photos from the ATM camera at the bank and pulled the suspect's fingerprint from a receipt.

Newton is also a suspect in a June 8 vehicle burglary in the 3000 block of Concordia.

He was apprehended Thursday after police learned he received a ride to near South Grand following the morning assault. When police arrived, Newton took off running and jumped a barbed wire fence into a maintenance yard.

A K-9 was used to track Newton in the yard and take him into custody. The MPD Heat team and investigators assisted in the capture.

He is being held on two counts of armed robbery, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, one count of first degree rape and one count of unauthorized use of an access card.

Bail was set at $1,000,000, and three of his charges require being held without bond.
