Planet Fitness to replace Grand Haven bowling alley rolling since 1960

GRAND HAVEN, MI - A bowling alley that has served the Grand Haven area since 1960 will soon be transformed into a Planet Fitness.

The 3-acre parcel on which Starlite Lanes sits was recently sold to Grand Haven-based @HomeRealty. The Starlite Lanes building was purchased by Planet Fitness.

"We expect Planet Fitness in Grand Haven to open in late 2018, early 2019 as there are renovations to be done to the building," a company spokesperson told MLive/Muskegon Chronicle via email.

Planet Fitness has two locations in the Muskegon area, one on Henry Street and one on Apple Avenue that opened at the start of 2018. There are more than 1,500 locations throughout the United States.

The nationwide gym franchise caters to "first-time and casual gym goers who may have never belonged to a gym before." Planet Fitness is known for its "judgement-free zone" and low membership fees.

The gym will occupy about 24,000 square feet of the 30,000-square-foot building, according to @HomeRealty founder Jake Hogeboom.

It's unclear what the other 6,000-square-feet will be used for.

As for the bowling alley, it's been for sale for about three years, Hogeboom said. The company is working to find a location for a smaller "boutique" bowling alley that would offer five to six lanes.

It's unclear when Starlite Lanes will close. Owners did not reply to email and phone inquiries from MLive/Muskegon Chronicle.

In addition, @HomeRealty is developing open space on the Starlite Lanes property, Hogeboom said. Plans include construction of two buildings south of the existing structure. One will house @HomeRealty. The other will be the new home of Fit Body Boot Camp of Grand Haven.

@HomeRealty has outgrown its current 8,500-square-foot space, Hogeboom said. The new building is expected to offer about 16,000-square-feet on two floors. The company could double its employee count due to the new space, from about 110 to 220.

The expectation is to start construction on the two buildings by the end of summer if all goes smoothly with the Grand Haven City Planning Commission in June, he said.

Fit Body Boot Camp is currently located at 807 Robbins Road in Grand Haven. @HomeRealty is located at 510 Miller Drive in Grand Haven.
