The spread of Planet Fitness gyms in the Memphis area will cross into DeSoto County for the first time.
The chain of discount fitness centers has leased 22,000 square feet in the Olive Branch Crossing shopping center. The space was built for a Fresh Market that never moved in.
The retail center at 5189 Goodman Road, at Pleasant Hill, is anchored by Academy Sports and Hobby Lobby.
Planet Fitness Olive Branch will be chain's eighth gym in the Memphis area.
In the lease deal, Danny Buring and Dustin Jones of The Shopping Center Group represented the landlord and Steven Levy of Levy Commercial Realty and Ron Simkin of The Simkin Group represented Planet Fitness.
The low-cost club offers memberships for as little as $10 monthly.
The Kentucky-based Planet Fitness frachisee, PF Arkansas LLC, already operates five Planet Fitness gyms in Memphis, including at 1635 Poplar, 1880 N. Germantown Parkway, 4126 Elvis Presley and at 4700 Summer where the old Imperial Bowling lanes were demolished to make room for the new building. Two other Planet Fitness sites, in Bartlett and in Hickory Hill, are owned by another franchisee.
PF Arkansas is "still in active expansion mode'' and has committed to establishing about six more gyms in the Memphis area, Levy said Tuesday. "We still feel there are opportunities in the greater Memphis market. We continue to look for sites and have several under negotiation now.''
In fall 2016, Levy said the franchisee was looking for new locations "everywhere from Millington to the north to Southaven to the south to Downtown on the west.''
