BLUE Planet II airs its most emotional episode ever this week when a short-finned pilot whale is shown carrying the carcass of its dead baby for days.
The sea creature is seen mourning the death of its calf that died from toxic shock, in Sunday’s episode called The Big Blue, after pollution made her milk poisonous.
And even show host Sir David Attenborough, 91, admitted watching the scene nearly made him cry.
He revealed: “There are some sad scenes in this series - this was just one that tears were nearly brought to my eyes.”
And while viewers are set to be left heartbroken by the scene, show producer James Honeyborne claims it’s vital they show the audience “a range of stories”.
He said: “Across the show you’ll see there are some poignant and sad moments – I think it’s important we tell a range of stories that do create those emotions.
“In this we have a very sad moment where a mother whale has a newborn calf that has died and the scientists that were there believe that the mum’s own milk had become poisonous to the baby because of pollution.
“But if that’s what we’re seeing, and that’s what we’re filming, you’ve got to show it.
“Obviously we want people to fall in love with the ocean and the great characters in it and we want them to feel a connection with the ocean that they haven’t felt before but equally we also have to tell the stories that we find and hopefully we’ve got this right.”
Sir David admitted that he has taken steps in his everyday life to cut down on pollution to prevent things like this from happening – including stopping drinking bottled water.
He said: “I’ve given up bottled water, I can’t say tap water tastes as good to be truthful but there you are.
“I mean I was thinking that last time I was drinking and I thought ‘oh god, this is terrible stuff’ but I have done that.”
