Appearing on today’s BBC Breakfast, cameraman Roger Munns revealed that he was forced to repeatedly dunk his hand in “scolding” water while shooting for Sunday’s coral reef instalment.
He was forced to immediately return to the surface after accidentally touching a deadly creature, which caused his finger to turn black.
Hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt were left shocked as he recounted what happened while discussing what viewers can expect alongside producer Jonathan Smith.
When asked about his injury, Roger commented: “[It was] completely my own fault, we were filming on the sandy flats and I put my hand down just where a stonefish had decided to bury himself and make his home.”
He continued: “They have a pretty nasty spine on their back and it punctured my finger. That was the end of the dive pretty quickly.
“[I] came up and then it was a case of dipping it in a lot of scolding hot water to denature the protein-based poison. But I was back in the water the next day and it was entirely my own fault.”
Earlier on, Charlie had found himself getting a very odd honour after a clip was shown of a clown fish.
“Why didn’t that clown fish get a name? Because the tusk fish got a name. He was Percy and he needs a name! He’s just two much of a character not to have one,” Naga, 42, urged.
Jonathan replied: “Look, we’re open to names if you have one?” and she quickly added: “Charlie! Charlie the clown fish,” after her co-star, 55.
