X Factor pulled in just 5.1 million — the worst in its 13 years — as Simon Cowell missed the episode after falling down the stairs at his home on Friday.
Blue Planet II enthralled viewers with bird-eating and sex-changing fish, a baby walrus and stingrays leaping 6ft.
Celebrity fans including Lord Sugar, Paddy McGuinness and Paloma Faith heaped online praise on the BBC1 show.
But ITV’s X Factor faced a backlash after axing its sing-off and making other changes.
Viewer Jason Thomas tweeted: “If you watched X Factor instead of Blue Planet you need to take a long look in the mirror and rethink your life choices.”
Another fan added: “Blue Planet is just so much better.
