X Factor pulled in just 5.1 million — the worst in its 13 years — as Simon Cowell missed the episode after falling down the stairs at his home on Friday.

Blue Planet II enthralled viewers with bird-eating and sex-changing fish, a baby walrus and stingrays leaping 6ft.

Celebrity fans including Lord Sugar, Paddy McGuinness and Paloma Faith heaped online praise on the BBC1 show.

But ITV’s X Factor faced a backlash after axing its sing-off and making other changes.
