The Coolest Menswear Designers on the Planet: Everything You Need to Know About AMI, Kinfolk, and United Arrows

Catch up with the talented names behind the best menswear brands of the year before shopping our exclusive Gap collaboration.

In 2017, we're calling them the Coolest Menswear Designers on the Planet™ but for the last decade, GQ celebrated the Best New Menswear Designers in America: the brightest new stars in the menswear landscape, as selected by longtime GQ creative director Jim Moore. Starting in 2012, those winners partnered with Gap to release an exclusive collection of one-off items. And this year, we've gone global, anointing AMI, Kinfolk, and United Arrows the Coolest Designers of the Year, in this or any other country. We made the announcement back in May, after a globe-trotting road trip to choose the winners. We talked with each designer in August, to figure out just what makes each of them quite so cool. And just last week, we debuted each brand's Gap collection, and broke down every piece. (Everything will hit select Gap stores and gap.com on Tuesday, September 26.)

Along the way, we spent some time with the winners. We visited studios. We tried on the clothes. We gave our feedback. We went out for steak. We tried on the clothes again. And we got the whole thing on film. Below, take a look at what goes into being one of the Coolest Designers on the Planet.

AMI

Perfect French clothes to wear to work, lunch, brunch, the soccer field, the cafe, the club, and anywhere else you can think of.

United Arrows

The Japanese label that will sell you a chunky-lapel suit—and must-be-vintage denim that's somehow new.

Kinfolk

The Brooklyn brand that makes perfect graphic tees—and throws even better parties.
