BRIAN COX ON NIBIRU: TV scientist breaks silence over Planet X end of the world prophecy

Mr Cox, who shot to fame after presenting Wonders of the Solar System on BBC2 in 2010, felt compelled to speak out following weeks of viral internet claims that the world could end on September 23, because it had been foretold in a passage from the Bible.

Scores of online doom mongers warned a star system called Nibiru or Planet X was about to wreak havoc on our world.

Mr Cox took to Twitter to slam theorists who were claiming the world could end on September 23.

On September 21 he tweeted: "I consider this an experiment. If we're still here on 24th, we can conclude that all doomsday prophesy is b******s."

He then took a further swipe at Planet X believers, tweeting: "I think the Nibru Nobbers is a great name for a band."

After the world woke up safely on September 24, Mr Cox tweeted: "Apparently the Nibiru Cataclysm has been delayed for around two years."

Mr Cox had not tweeted about the Nibiru claims for five years since a former doomsday day in 2012 was given.

At the time he said: "If anyone else asks me about 'Nibiru' the imaginary bulls**t planet I will slap them around their irrational heads with Newton's Principia."

Mr Cox's latest remarks did not go unnoticed by former British Ministry of Defence investigator Nick Pope who did his best to debunk the Nibiru theory, which was branded a hoax by Nasa, at the peak of the frenzy.

Mr Pope tweeted: "Interesting, @ProfBrianCox and I seem to be the two people doing most to debunk the #Nibiru doomsday nonsense in the mainstream media."

Mr Pope said he had received hate mail from Nibiru believers for being so vocal against the theory.

He said he was called a "lying government s**t" by one Planet X believer, adding in a tweet: "I'm receiving hate mail for being the person the media quote when it comes to debunking #Nibiru doomsday nonsense."

One of the main Nibiru theorists is US-based David Meade, who penned the book Planet X - The 2017 Arrival.

He claimed Nibiru would become visible on September 23 before passing Earth and causing the start of the Biblical rapture next month.

Mr Meade warned a rare astrological constellation on September 23, was foretold in a passage from the Bible, and was a warning of the arrival of Nibiru next month.

Earlier this year, Mr Meade told Dailystar.co.uk he predicted Nibiru to be visible in the sky from September 23 but it has not been spotted yet.
